Four years before Ray Houghton ignited the dormant embers of Irish soccer passion, as his header sailed into the sultry night sky of Stuttgart, over the head of a disbelieving Peter Shilton, and into the back of the English net, a number of folk from Kenmare huddled against the harsh elements in a timeworn dry stone wall in Mastergeehy, Waterville, County Kerry to witness Inter Kenmare’s first ever competitive match in their own field of destiny. The propitious year was 1984 and 12 months later, after a meeting in a room in the Shamrock Bar, now Foleys, the team entered the Kerry District League and a club was born.
